Hiking Underwear for Men: How to Choose a Pair That Won't Ruin the Trail

You planned the route. You checked the weather. You bought the fancy socks. Then mile three hits and your underwear starts a mutiny.

It happens to everybody. Good news: it's an easy fix. Here's how to choose hiking underwear that keeps up, from the Chill Boys crew in Minnesota.

Why your underwear matters more than your boots (almost)

Boots get all the attention. But your underwear is the layer touching you the whole hike. Every step, every climb, every scramble over a log.

If it holds sweat, you feel it. If it bunches, you feel it. If it rides up, everybody behind you on the trail sees you fixing it. Not a great look at the overlook.

So the goal is simple. Soft, cool, and stays put.

Fabric: skip the cotton

Air moving through Performance Boxers micro-mesh

Cotton is great on the couch. On the trail, it soaks up sweat and hangs onto it. Wet cotton plus a long climb is a recipe for a bad afternoon.

Look for a light, breathable fabric that moves sweat away from skin and dries quickly.

Our Performance Boxers are made from 85% micro-mesh polyamide nylon and 15% Lycra spandex. The mesh lets air move through. It wicks moisture and dries fast. One way to put it: air conditioning for your undercarriage.

Prefer a natural feel for easier hikes and camp time? Our Soft Bamboo Boxers are made from viscose from bamboo. Soft, breathable, and cooler than cotton.

Fit: no ride-up, no wedgie

Fit is where most underwear loses the hike.

Too tight and it binds when you step up. Too loose and the fabric bunches. Either way, it starts climbing. You did not sign up for a wedgie with a view.

Look for stretch that moves with you, a waistband that stays in place, and leg openings that don't roll.

Performance Boxers have a relaxed fit and multi-stretch fabric. They're designed to move with you and not bind or ride up. The soft waistband holds them in place, and there's no itchy tag.

Inseam and chafing

Chafing is where inner thighs rub on a long day. Fabric choice and leg length both matter.

Performance Boxers have about a 3-inch inseam. They're a short, roomy boxer with a no-chafe feel and plenty of airflow. Great if you run hot or hate anything snug.

Want more coverage on the thighs? Performance Boxer Briefs have a 7.5-inch inseam and the same micro-mesh. The longer leg covers more of the zone where rubbing starts.

Support: boxers or boxer briefs?

This one comes down to the trail.

Easy miles, flat paths, warm days: Boxers. Loose and breezy.

Steep climbs, trail runs, rocky descents: Boxer briefs. Performance Boxer Briefs are athletic, with 4-way stretch and pouch support. Everything stays where it belongs when the trail gets bumpy. Bonus: limited edition prints like Camo, so you blend in with the trees. Mostly.

Lots of hikers pack both. Briefs for the big climb day, boxers for the rest. No rule says you have to commit.

Packing for a hiking trip

Heading out for more than a day? A few tips.

  • Pack light fabric. Micro-mesh is thin and folds small.
  • Plan on rinsing. Quick-drying fabric makes a sink or camp rinse more realistic.
  • Bring a backup. Rain, creek crossings, and spilled coffee happen.
  • Keep one cozy pair for camp. Bamboo boxers are a nice change once the boots come off.

Same goes for road trips and flights. If it works on the trail, it works in seat 23B.

Quick checklist

  • Breathable, moisture-wicking fabric (not cotton)
  • Stretch that moves with you
  • Waistband that stays put
  • No itchy tag
  • The inseam you like: short and roomy, or longer for thigh coverage
  • Pouch support if the trail gets rough

FAQ

What is the best underwear for hiking?

A breathable, moisture-wicking fabric that stays put. Micro-mesh nylon and spandex, like our Performance Boxers, is a good pick for warm or sweaty hikes.

Are boxers or boxer briefs better for hiking?

Boxers are great for airflow on easier miles. Boxer briefs give more thigh coverage and support for steep or fast trails.

Is cotton underwear OK for hiking?

For a short walk, sure. On long or sweaty hikes, cotton holds moisture and can get uncomfortable.

Is bamboo underwear good for hiking?

Bamboo boxers are soft and breathable, nice for easy hikes and camp. For big sweaty days, our micro-mesh Performance fabric dries faster.

What's the inseam on Chill Boys Performance Boxers?

About 3 inches. It can vary slightly by size. Performance Boxer Briefs have a 7.5-inch inseam.
