   Mount Katahdin, ME - "Katahdin" literally means "great mountain", and great is an understatement for this challenging hike! Located at the heart of Baxter State Park, Mount Katahdin is the tallest mountain in Maine and one of the tallest in the Northeast. This stunning mountain features several steep peaks for you to climb and, if you're a real thrill seeker, you can hike the Knife Edge ridgeline, which is only 3 feet wide! Adventuring up Katahdin is no easy feat, and should only be attempted by experienced hikers. Make no mistake, this mountain will push you to your limits and leave you oozing buckets of sweat, which is why it's vital to pack some nice, cool boxers and a comfy shirt to keep you from getting overheated as you climb.
2. Mount Marcy, NY - Upstate New York is home to the Adirondack High Peaks, some of the tallest and most scenic mountains in the Northeast. Mount Marcy stands the highest of these many peaks and, not coincidentally, provides the best hiking of the bunch. Most of this mountain is covered in beautiful forest but the summit stands well above the treeline. If you're in for a cool view, Lake Tear of the Clouds, one of the highest lakes in the Northeast, can be found on the southwest slope of the mountain. Hiking Mount Marcy will require endurance in spades, so make sure you're well-rested and well-prepared. Wear the right clothes, and maybe pack a light hoodie to keep you warm as you near the summit. If you make your way to the top of the mountain on a clear day, you'll be able to see all the way to Vermont and Quebec!
3. Mount Tom, MA - There are quite a few "Mount Toms" in the United States but Massachusetts might just have the coolest Mount Tom of the lot. The highest traprock peak in the Metacomet Ridge that stretches across New England, this particular Mount Tom rises above the Connecticut River and offers hikers some amazing views. At 1,202 feet tall, Mount Tom is far from the tallest mountain in the Northeast but its steep and rugged slopes make for a challenging hike; perfect for a relatively short day hike that leaves plenty of time for Boston bar-hopping or a ball game at Fenway in the evening. Just be sure to pack an extra pair of boxer briefs and socks so you don't smell too gnarly!
4. Mount Washington, NH - Do you want to hike up the highest peak in the Northeast? Of course you do! Rising to an impressive 6,288 feet, Mount Washington is buried amidst the White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire. Extreme hikers looking for an epic adventure need look no further; Mount Washington is notorious for its steep slope and its chaotic weather. A record-holding windspeed of 231 mph was recorded by the mountain's observatory! If "extreme" isn't your speed, just avoid trails that travel to the summit, as there are plenty of easier hiking trails in the lower parts of the mountain and the surrounding forest. However, if you do brave Mount Washington and reach the summit, you'll be rewarded with one of the most breath-taking views in the Northeast!
